Statement

I'm Daniel Oduro, known as Danny Best, a Ghanaian multidisciplinary artist working in graphite, charcoal, and coloured pencils since 2017. My practice is built on portraiture, though a face, to me, is never just a face. It's a symbol. Layers of identity, struggle, and responsibility sit underneath the likeness. In 2020, a piece called Hope For Africa changed how I understood my own work. People didn't just admire it, they sat with it. That's when art stopped being something I did and became something I'm responsible to. Realism isn't the point of what I make. It's the language I use to make a point. Every problem in the world begins with people, and every solution begins there too. I'm not building portraits that end at admiration. I'm building work that leaves people a little less willing to look away.

Daniel Oduro popularly known as Danny Best is a Ghanaian multidisciplinary visual artist whose work explores the human condition and the power of individual choices to shape society. Since beginning his artistic journey in 2017, he has developed a practice rooted in portraiture, using graphite, charcoal, and colored pencils to create works that invite reflection, dialogue, and change. A defining moment in his career came in 2020 with Hope For Africa, a work that resonated deeply with audiences and affirmed his belief that art has the power to move people beyond admiration into meaningful reflection. That experience transformed art from a personal passion into a lifelong commitment. At the heart of Danny’s practice is the conviction that every societal issue begins with people. Whether addressing identity, education, mental health, environmental responsibility, leadership, faith, resilience, family, or social justice, his work asks a simple yet profound question: What kind of world are we creating through our everyday decisions? Rather than producing portraits solely to capture physical likeness, Danny constructs visual narratives that encourage viewers to look beyond the surface. Faces become symbols of shared human experiences, while layered imagery reveals the unseen stories, struggles, hopes, dreams, and responsibilities that shape both individuals and communities. Working across graphite, charcoal, paint, and coloured pencils, he continues to explore new media and techniques that strengthen both technical excellence and conceptual depth. His practice is driven by the belief that realism is not an end in itself, but a language through which important conversations can be told. Danny's vision is to build a body of work that challenges indifference, inspires responsibility, and reminds viewers that lasting change begins with the choices each person makes. Through his art, he hopes to leave every audience with a renewed willingness to become part of that change.
